Greetings all,
For many years I have been somewhat at a loss to understand parts of Revelation ch16.
8Then the fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun, and power was given to him to scorch men with fire. 9And men were scorched with great heat, and they blasphemed the name of God who has power over these plagues; and they did not repent and give Him glory.
10Then the fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast, and his kingdom became full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues because of the pain. 11They blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and did not repent of their deeds.
REV 16:8-11 Nkjv
The Problem for me, (partly caused by the NIV (which seems to be little better than a paraphrase)) is the apparent cursing of God(NIV) by mankind in the face of divine judgment.
After all, it would be one thing to go through life not paying any attention to the Lord, but an entirely different thing once knowing He is pouring out judgment, to consciously ignore His intervening acts and/or to 'thumb' ones nose at Him, let alone to curse Him.
So I have been at a loss to see how this could be, based on a fairly literal view of the scriptures as presented by the NIV. After all, to 'curse God' is getting rather personal and confrontational.
It seems to me that the Kjv and Nkjv, by using the word 'blasphemed' in place of cursed(NIV) allows for a better understanding of man's response to divine judgment in these apocalyptic times.
In recent times the human race by and large has been exercising an incredible amount of pride, conceit, and arrogance in response to so called 'Global Warming' and 'Climate change'. The idea that mankind can engineer climate control or influence global temperature is pure unadulterated arrogance. If there is any truth to the claims by some that either climate change or global warming is happening, then we must look to the Lord God for the cause / reason / possible relief.
I'm not saying that these things are in fact a manifestation of, or the literal fulfillment of the 'BOWL JUDGMENTS'. However I feel confident that mankind will not, in the face of these Bowl Judgments attribute them to judgments from God, but rather just as now, with global warming and climate change scares, he will concoct fanciful fables to explain what is happening and he will look to his own feeble resources and intellect to try to combat the problems.
In these things then, God will
not be cursed, instead He will continue to be ignored and spoken of as just a by word, He will continue to be blasphemed, or spoken of in an impious manner as he is today, and has been for years. Mankind will not repent in the face of judgment as the scriptures tell. But God Cursed? not very likely, after all one needs to acknowledge a person in order to curse them.
Comments welcome
God Bless,
