Marc, I believe Gnosticism is one reason why Paul listed the qualifications of the bishop and the deacon in the church where Timothy was pastor. I believe much is read into or attributed to Paul in understanding of these verses than Paul's purpose for writing them.
Your use of the word "pastor" has me wondering. Do you use that in the biblical sense as in the bible pastor is actually an elder - a church office established by God. "Pastor" as used in modern language is usually referring to a minister or preacher. A preacher does not have the qualifications enumerated as the pastor, elder, or bishop does. Indeed at the time Timothy was probably single thus it was impossible for him to be a "pastor".
